Freedom Call

By

Takiela Bynum - Hope for Young WomenFreedom Call, by Takiela Bynum

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge in the flesh; rather serve one another humbly in love.
Galatians 5:13

If you are indeed counted as part of the family of God, you are the brothers and sisters Paul is referring to at the beginning of this Scripture. He is specifically talking to the children of God. The ending portion of the first sentence in that Scripture simply states, “…were called to be free.” That is the believers’ freedom call. We are called. The word called in this passage of Scripture is defined as “to summon by or as if by divine command” by Dictionary.com. As children of God, we have been divinely commanded to liberation, this is our heavenly freedom call. Our Father has called His children to be free.

There’s only one condition…you can’t misuse your liberty.

Your new found freedom cannot be used to gratify selfish impulses.

Sometimes there are stipulations to God’s promises. He will attach specific conditions to His word that are for our own spiritual growth and development, for our own good. We could also classify this Scripture in the cause and effect category as well. For example, if you use your (divinely commanded) freedom to indulge your flesh, you will be bound to it – because you used your freedom for carnal pleasures, you are now enslaved to it.

You cannot have freedom in Christ and satisfy your flesh simultaneously. That would be like serving two masters, which clearly the Bible states cannot be accomplished.

Luke16:13 (Jesus talking) “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other….”

Brother and sisters in Christ, we are called to be free, indeed. However, remember if you use your liberation to fulfill your ungodly cravings you will be imprisoned by it. Your freedom call can become your freedom fall, the choice belongs to you.

Finally, we are to serve each other in humility and love. It’s a win-win situation.
