Joy Jochems - Single Moms Bloggerjoy-aweShe sleeps. Sprawled from one end of the bed to the other.  Young arms thrown freely over pillows. Slender leg dangling over mattress edge. Peaceful beauty and precious innocence canvassing her serene expression.

And I am in awe.

I am in awe of God’s goodness and blessing.

In awe that I share this space, this earth with such a special creation.

In awe that I have the privilege and responsibility of being her mother.

And then I am convicted.

I am convicted that I wake up too many mornings and miss the sleeping beauty.

Convicted that awe moments pass me by like dust particles in the breeze – ubiquitous but fleeting, sparkling in the sunlight – yet I fail to take notice.

Convicted that my eye for the awe-inspiring has degenerated.

In the book One Thousand Gifts, author Ann Voskamp writes about her journey of gratitude. In an effort to list a thousand things that she loves, things for which she is grateful, she discovers awe in the “big” (God’s protection of her son) and in the small (“jam piled high on toast”).  Her eyes – and her heart – become open to the awe and miraculous in each day, in each moment (even the tough ones).

How do we nurture within our souls the natural outpouring of gratitude, of recognition of God’s greatness and awesomeness all around us? How do we tenderize ourselves to ready reception of the miracles that breeze through our “everydays”?

By doing it.

One moment at a time, we practice. Sticky notes, appointment reminders, list-making, goal-setting … whatever it takes to begin the process of developing a permanent (and positive) habit.  For in the faithful practice we invite behaviors to take root, to grow into beautiful and fruitful living, to fill the air around us (and the hearts inside us) with the sweet aroma of Christ.

And when we begin to forget, when we let ourselves slip into “out of practice”…

We begin again.

Practice again. Practice more. Practice often. Pressing on to the goal of awe-filled living.

We are part of an unshakeable kingdom. We serve the King of kings. And see what great love the Father has lavished on us (I John 3:1)!

How abundant are the good things that You have stored up for those who fear You, that You bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in You (Psalm 31:19)!

Do you see what we’ve got? An unshakable kingdom! And do you see how thankful we must be? Not only thankful, but brimming with worship, deeply reverent before God (Hebrews 12:28).

Lavish love. Abundance of good things, given in plain sight. An unshakable kingdom. Every day, every hour, every moment – a plethora of gratitude-prompts, waiting for you to take note and be awed.
