Home Harvest

By

Joy Jochems - Single Moms BloggerDHarvest by Joy Jochemso you ever get tired of New Year’s resolutions? Bored by the tedious ritual of making commitments we’d like to keep, all the while skirting the reality of our fleeting determination.  “Eat better, exercise more, quit a bad habit.” They’re good ambitions, don’t get me wrong. And I think it’s healthful and beneficial for us to set goals, to have vision, to seek to improve.  It’s just that sometimes all these “resolutions” begin to blend together in a mixed up, monotone narration of blasé pledges.

But how about resolving to make a difference for eternity this year? And what if I told you that you won’t even have to leave your own home to fulfill the commitment?  Mamas, we have a ready mission field every time our feet hit the floor. Check out this exhortation from God’s Word:

Let us not become weary in doing good,
for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9

I understand “weary”. Most moms do. There are days that I feel totally inadequate to take on the full responsibilities of raising three kids. There are days when it is so much easier to “let them do what they want” because I’m too tired to discipline. (I said “easier”…not “better”!) Easier to let the electronics occupy their minds. Easier to pop in a movie after dinner than to open the Word together. “Easy”, however, is not eternal.

But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Matthew 7:14

The fields are ripe in our homes. I don’t want to be content just to see my kids get “saved and baptized.” I want to see them develop a heart for God and for serving Him. I want to see them hunger for righteousness and the Truth. I want to see them thirst for God and follow Him. And that doesn’t happen if I give up and pick the easy way. (And isn’t it interesting that the easier way results in me being tired?)

Let’s press on to do the good things, the right things. Let’s turn off the TVs and the iPads and open the Word with our kids. Let’s not become weary in preparing the soil of the hearts of our children, in sowing seeds of Life into them. And let’s not give up! Let’s resolve to make 2014 the season of harvest!
