Learning from A.L.O.N.E.

By

Joy Jochems - Single Moms Bloggerjoy-aloneI have officially been single longer than I was married, a single parent longer than a partnered parent.  I’ve not traveled this road as long as some, but in my sojourning the Lord has graciously and gently (and repeatedly!) spoken to me these life-grounding truths:

A            “ALONE? NEVER.” On our most suffocating days, from the depths of our most miry pits, on the loneliest nights, and in the crushing trials, His voice whispers through the fog, “I am with you.”  Over and over and over again in Scripture, He pairs that promise with the calming plea, “Do not be afraid.”  He often says, “I am with you to deliver (or rescue) you.” Never will He leave or forsake His own (Hebrews 13:5). NEVER. He is Emmanuel, ALWAYS with us.

L             “LEARN MY LOVE.” Shattered hearts distort our perceptions of love. God’s love for us is patient and kind and unfailing and all those incredible things we learn in I Corinthians 13. God’s love is also indefatigable (“incapable of being tired out; not yielding to fatigue; untiring” – dictionary.com). It is generous and immovable and unconditional.  He wants us to soak all that up, to rest in it, to be comforted in His arms, to be quieted by His songs.  We learn to receive it, and then we learn to give it. Sacrificially, completely, unceasingly.

O            “OBEY AND TRUST ME.” When we feel like giving in to our exhaustion or discouragement, we must “die to self and live for Him” (I Peter 2:24). When the way is hard and that path is dark, we take another step forward in faith. When the world tells us to “do whatever makes you happy”, we must tune our ears to instead hear His voice behind us saying, “This is the way; walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21).

N            “NEARER, NEARER TO ME.” He beckons us. He woos us. He longs for us to be closer and closer and closer to Him. We learn to dwell in His presence (Psalm 140:13), to partner with Him in this life (Romans 6:4), to feast on His Word (Psalm 1:2), to engage Him in conversation again and again and again throughout the day (I Thessalonians 5:17). We hunger and thirst for Him (Matthew 5:6). We seek after Him (Hebrews 11:6). And the beautiful, amazing promises are these: He’s already coming our way (James 4:8) and He’s ready to meet our needs without condemnation (Hebrews 4:16).

E             I AM ENOUGH.” He is enough to meet every need: physical, financial, spiritual, emotional, relational … you name it! He is our Faithful Provider (Malachi 3:10). He is the Lavish Lover of our souls (Jeremiah 31:3). He is Emmanuel, our Constant Companion (Matthew 1:23). He is our Truest Friend (John 15:15). He is our Wisdom (James 1:5) and our Strength (Psalm 18:1) and our Righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). There is not a single need in our lives that God cannot meet (Philippians 4:19).  We can confidently agree with the words of Christian artist Chris Tomlin, “All of You is more than enough for all of me, for every thirst and every need. You satisfy me with Your love, and all I have in You is more than enough.”

So wherever you’re at, whatever your circumstances, however you’re feeling, know this, my friend in Christ: YOU. ARE. NOT. ALONE. Remember that God is with you. Invest in learning His love (and living it!). Trust and obey. Take another step closer to Him today…and then do it again tomorrow…and the next day…and the day after that… And never forget He is your MORE THAN ENOUGH.
