Obeying God – The Simply Complicated

By

Takiela Bynum - Hope for Young WomenObeying God - The Simply Complicated by Takiela BynumImagine if you were mountain climbing alone and lost track of time. Once you realized you would not reach the bottom before dark, you quickened your speed. In your effort to move faster, one thing lead to another and you dropped all of your equipment.

Now you’re running out of daylight and fog has accompanied the evening. You think you’re close to the bottom but cannot distinguish because of the fog. At last the night has engulfed the sky with no indication of you nearing the bottom. You keep moving toward the bottom, concerned about how much rope you have left. The temperature has dropped drastically.

Your fingers area numb from the cold and you’ve come to the end of your rope, literally.

All of a sudden, God whispers to your spirit, “Let go.”

You think you’re losing your mind. You begin to pray for strength to hold on until daylight, you pray to see your family again, you pray for warmth, for your life to be spared.

God whispers again, “Let go.”

You are sure the darkness is playing tricks on your mind and you wrap your hands up tight in the rope and concentrate on staying warm. As the hours tick by you grow more exhausted, barely able to keep your eyes open.

God whispers, “My child, let go of the rope.” Your hands are raw and sore from white knuckling the rope, you can no longer feel the cold. You drift, fighting the voice telling you to let go.

Would you obey God and let go? What would you do if you were surrounded by darkness and fog, completely unable to rely on your eyes? In addition, the temperature is in the freezing range and you’re now fighting against hypothermia. Would you let go of the rope preventing you from falling to your death?

Obeying God can be simple yet complicated. Simple turns to complicated when fear and doubt enter the equation. To completely obey without question is to have an undeniable faith. Think about it, if we were to obey God 100% of the time, without fear, without doubt, our faith would be remarkable. However, it is the fear and the doubt that tarnish our obedience and faith.

Abraham demonstrates his obedience to God with his complete willingness to taking the life of his own son, a remarkable display of faith (see Genesis 22 for the details). I would be the first to admit, I don’t think I would have been able to do what God required of me in that situation. God has given us numerous examples of obedience in the Bible, the greatest example is Christ, who obeyed even unto death.

Obedience is to completely render your will to the will of another and who better to yield your life to than that of God, (the creator of life itself).

The following morning, a search party discovered the body of the mountain climber, frozen, three feet from the ground.

The moral of the story is, don’t complicate the simple act of obeying the God that only has your best interest at heart. Obeying God will un-complicate the simple.
