Summer in the Son

By

sunDaylight lingers, sun shines longer, buds bloom brighter and grass grows greener. Summer is right around the corner! “No more homework, no more books …” and (at least at my house) no more daily grind! For the most part, we shuck the bulky cloaks of winter scheduling and embrace the easy, breezy, carefree smock of summertime.

And we are outside … a lot. Break out the sunscreen and short sleeves, because it is time to soak up some vitamin D! I slather my kids and out we go (and typically, I forget to give myself a good coating).

In all of the fun and frivolity of a relaxed routine, I must exercise caution. Not only with skincare and exposure, but also in the realm of my heart.

You see, when the schedule gets slack, so do my habits. We stay up late and sleep in, so my quiet time gets pushed aside. We plan fun trips and special outings, and I shear my prayers to short quips about safety and blessing. Just because the routine has changed doesn’t mean my priorities can.

And I know I’m not the only one. Church attendance wanes in the summer time. Bible studies go on leave until September. Accountability goes slack.

So here’s the question: Can I have the “summer of my dreams” without blocking the Son?

And here’s the answer, straight from the mouth of the Savior:

Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
(Matthew 6:33)

Will it take discipline? (Ugh. There’s that word again.) Of course it will! But I can promise you this: He is worth striving after. That relationship with the Lord is worth fighting for, no matter the season. We cannot let a weather change interfere with the climate of our hearts.

Might I have to pick up a little of the routine I’ve packed away with my winter clothes? Definitely. I must purpose to make Him my priority. Not a priority, but the Priority. That means scheduling time with Him.

It means taking Him on vacation with me. It means setting an example for my children that a walk with Christ does not take a holiday.

So this summer, let us purpose to soak up the Son instead of blocking Him. Worship as we weed the garden, take the Bible on our picnics, get on our knees in the sand. Wherever, whenever, however … let’s live this summer in the Son!
