The Reign of Worry

By

Takiela Bynum - Hope for Young Women The Reign of Worry by Takiela BynumThe month of December is flooded with the commercialism of Christmas. Where there is commercialism there is pressure measure up to the standard set by society. Where there is unnecessary pressure there is stress and where there is stress, worry is always present.

Did you know that during the month of December the suicide rate dramatically increases? It shoots through the roof. Why is it that during the most popular and widely celebrated holiday also brings the most self-inflicted deaths? It’s because the meaning of Christmas has been reduced to profit making opportunities. Christmas is viewed as the largest revenue generating contingencies in the industry.

Advertisements regarding various Christmas gifts that will (allegedly) bring instant gratification and joy are overwhelming. If you can’t afford these gifts, you’re letting your family down, and next come the feelings of guilt. The pressure is on to obtain gifts for your family and/or friends, that lead to stress, which boils down to worry. It’s a vicious cycle and has the potential to be lethal.

There comes a point in your life when the reign of worry must be replaced by the reign of worship (in Christ). Circumstances will attempt to place worry on the throne where God belongs in your life. Actually, worry should have no place in our lives. The scriptures tell us to be anxious for NOTHING. In essence, any (single) thing that will cause us mental distress has already been misplaced in our life because we are instructed that nothing should be worrying us. If you keep reading in the same scripture (Philippians 4:6) it also provides further instructions on what you should do when faced with worrisome situations, which is to pray and petition God about every (single) thing and add thanksgiving. In case things are unclear to us, God said bring everything to him. Isn’t He such a hero? Swooping in and taking on ALL of our issues, what a Savior! Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! It’s not superman, it’s super God to the rescue!

Worry, glorifies the problem, worship glorifies the potter (God). Matthew 11:28-30 says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Don’t carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. We weren’t designed to bear such a heavy load and we’ll crumble under it. Only Christ can lug around this load. Lay your worries at the foot of the cross and leave them. The Lord is telling us to come to Him.

I challenge you, do not allow worry to reign in your life, celebrate the Christ in Christmas and be liberated from the commercialism of Christmas. Take all your cares to the Lord. All you have to do is take one step and He will do the rest.
