The Joy in Letting Go

By

doorwayMay the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. — Romans 15:13

Not knowing what the outcome would be concerning my husband, even then my faith was unwavering. I honestly don’t remember a time when I wasn’t praying or reading my bible during his illness. If there is one thing I’ve learned about the journey of caring for a loved one as they slowly drift way is, if you’ve never been through it, you can’t possibly witness (i.e., feel) the experience. It’s how you go through the process that determines the outcome.

Although I had an abundance of support from family and friends, I often times felt alone until… that day — the day of choosing.

I will never forget God’s voice gently speaking to me, “You have two choices, you can think about death the way the world does or you can choose Me.” I immediately said, “Lord, I choose You!”

And, with that choice came a peace that surpasseth ALL worldly understanding. There is amazing joy, even in the midst of trials and tribulations that you get to experience when you “let go and let God.” When I “made the choice”, I was also blessed with a roadmap. I began to understand that my feelings had nothing to do with God’s will and my feelings had nothing to do with Ruben’s destiny. I literally had to let go in order to gain the experience that God desired me to have. Ruben was saved, He loved the Lord more than anything else in the world and he knew his destination, it was me who needed to catch up.

As I continued to read the bible, it was as though the words would come to life for me with an understanding that only the Holy Spirit could give. Because I surrendered to God’s will, He made the crooked (i.e., uneasy) ways straight for me. He literally took care of me. I trusted Him more and more therefore, every day was a day of complete faith.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” – The Word of God is not merely a book to read, it’s the foundation of establishing a relationship with Jesus Christ. When that happens, you’ll begin to know in your spirit just how much He sincerely loves you. The challenge for most people is that they want what they want, and when things don’t go their way, they question the validity of God and how could He possibly allow such hurt and disappointment exist for them. In Jeremiah 29:11, God said:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Even in times of despair, God still has a plan for your life. It’s one thing to believe Him, it’s another thing to know without a shadow of doubt, He created you for His purpose.

Although I prayed for Ruben to be healed on this side (the earth), I also desired, nevertheless not my will, but God’s will be done. It was that prayer that allowed me to understand what it meant to be, once blind but now I see, to ungrudgingly forgive and to love like God intends for us to love.

To obtain joy in the midst of circumstances is when you know the Lord for yourself. One of the greatest gifts God has given us is the choice to choose. I’m grateful for the choice I made and because of that, it is the joy of the Lord that gives me strength in every area of my life. (ref: Nehemiah 8:10)

I wish I could say that I let go and let God all the time, but that would be a lie.I don’t know why we can’t because we aren’t in control anyway. But I would like to tell you a couple of my experiences when I did. My son and his wife has had a rocky marriage from the start. They have 2 beautiful children. I won’t go into the ugly details but it got ugly. I don’t believe in divorce, so I just start praying, Lord, You say in Your word, You hate divorce and from the beginning it was not so. You also say, that what You have joined together let no man put asunder. I prayed and one day I opened the bible to psalms and there was this scripture staring me in the face. I will perfect that which concerns you. That gave me chills but I knew it was God speaking to me. I wasn’t looking for it, just opened up the bible to it. That was several years ago, and I can’t stay their marriage is great, but I can tell you that they have love for one another and I know God is still working. The second thing is we were going to my son’s house and my daughter called (from Orlando) we live in Al. and my son in Indiana. She told me my oldest grandson was running in P.E. and he just fell out. They lost his heat beat for 15 minutes. I believe the Lord had two coaches there that knew CPR and they worked on him til ambulance arrived. The doctors didn’t give his parents a lot of hope. They said if he did pull through they had no idea how much brain damage would occur. Long story short, he is one walking miracle. The doctors and nurses were amazed and so all the school staff. He was a very intelligent child and still is. The thing is although my daughter and I both was very concerned we had this peace that he would be ok. His dad almost lost his mind, and couldn’t understand what was wrong with my daughter. She said I can’t explain it , I just have this peace. They have had problems with him since, he will be 18 next month, but she has turned him over to the only One that has control over him and we can see God working on that too. He is highly intelligent but very stubborn and headstrong also. I believe God will use him in some way, but I don’t know that, I will just have to wait and see. The one thing I do know is that GOD IS IN CONTROL. I just wanted to share this story with you. I can’t say that my faith is always strong, and I never feel scared, but I do know that God has been so very good to me and my family. I hope you have a very blessed day. Lila Scott

    Hello Lila,
Thank you so much for sharing! I see that you and your daughter have a beautiful relationship with God. Wonderful! I will say that yes, God is in control and He has given us the blessing to be so as well.

We get to be in control of how and what we think about and how much faith and trust do we have concerning His word. That is what compels me to have faith the size of a mustard seed, simply because it’s not about me… it’s about my choice 🙂

God’s grace is so amazing and I celebrate the victory of marriage in your family and that God’s hand is on each and everyone of your family members.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Regina!
First let me say Thank you for writing this. As always your love for God keep’s me uplifted and faithful. I love that you took the time out of your own personal life just to share your journey. It has meant the world to me in so many aspects. I still to this day (and it’s been almost 3 year’s) cry for my mother’s presence as if she went home yesterday. Your lost of your dear husband Ruben was also very profound. I pray everyday that one day I’ll have the peace only God can give that surpasses all understanding. Please continue to share. You have and are helping me to find that peace.
