Single Ladies Part 5: Lady Samaria

By

joy-singlep4She’s unnamed, unwed, and used up. She’s been rejected, overlooked and scorned. Marriage had always failed her (five times, for one reason or another), and so she’d given up on it, too (for the man she was living with was not her husband).

To the water, apart from the other women, alone.  Daily duty calls, and she expects nothing more than the routine, silent, dusty walk to draw from the well. She can already feel the weight of the return trip: heavy pots of water and scorching, high-noon sun combining to burn her shoulders inside and out. Not to mention the commonplace, condemning stares that will greet her as she reenters the town.

But it’s not every day. At the well … could it be? Another person? A man? A Jew?!?! Little does she know that she is walking into a divine encounter, and her life is about to be changed forever.

And so the story goes on (John 4), and the Samaritan woman at the well has an incredible conversation with the Messiah. As their conversation begins, I can almost detect a hardness to her heart, a skepticism in her words.  Carefully, tenderly, the Savior speaks to her. He reveals her sin. He talks with her as an equal, discussing topics typically tossed around only by scholarly men! She begins to listen to what He’s telling her (even though, at times, it is difficult to hear).

Then, miraculously, a transformation begins to take place before our eyes…

The heart of stone softens and is replaced with a spirit of joy and belief.  In that moment, Lady Samaria finds what she’s been looking for all along! Not found in “just another man”, but in the God-Man! And her joy is uncontainable.

She rushes back to town, water and sun and condemning stares forgotten. She’s gushing, jubilant, ecstatic about her news. “Come and see!” she tells anyone who will hear. I believe that her transformation is apparent to others. For rather than ignore her or accuse her, they listen. They listen to the testimony of the changed reprobate. She is received by her rejecters, and now their lives will never be the same.

Are we not all, in some way, Lady Samarias?

Does your heart of stone need to be softened by an intimate encounter with the Savior?  Listen to His tender voice. Allow Him to shed light on your darkness, speak healing truth to your ravaged soul, and to transform you for His purposes.

Does your heart long to find fulfillment and worth? It will not be found in another man or another job or another purchase or another pursuit. It’s found at the well, where the Living Water is waiting and Life is offered abundantly.

Does your heart exude His joy? Her witness changed an entire town. And if we let it, it can change us, too. Then we will be the women bending the ears of any who will listen, proclaiming the love of our Savior, and bringing the masses to the feet of Jesus.
