Because more and more, consumers are resistant to blatant sales pitches. They are looking to develop relationships. The truth is, people don’t do business with businesses. They do business with people they like, know, and trust.

That is why social media is key. By building a following, you are developing a relationship with your target market. By showing them you are a real person rather then slamming them with pitch after pitch, you are creating trust and credibility.

I think of two unpleasant situations I had in this last year. One was a random telemarketing call. The sales person at first complimented me to the hilt, but then she started pushing. When I hesitated, she insulted me, wanting me to make a decision right then. I balked. The whole thing was completely ridiculous because of course I Googled the name of the company and found out it was a scam! It was a wasted, frustrating 15 minutes and I had to eventually hang up on her.

The other experience I had this year was a little more friendly. It was someone I knew, but she didn’t understand at all what I was interested in. She was just trying to sell me her product. She didn’t take the time to listen or to find out my needs were, just assuming that her company was so great that I would automatically want to sign up. I didn’t. It was awkward, but I had to say no.

So how should you approach sales? Stop thinking in terms of prospects. Think in these terms: you are showing up to serve. Listen to people. Find out what their pain is. Ask them questions. Make an effort to truly connect. Then if there’s a fit, offer a resource.

This has been truly the most effective sales method I’ve ever used. Because it is natural and I am just being authentic. I let my brand–what makes me uniquely me–speak for itself and it attracts people. I listen to problems people have and then I offer a resource when appropriate. Many times this is a free strategy session where I thoroughly listen to what’s holding them back and what they truly want. When I offer them a solution, they are eager to sign up!

When you think outside the box with sales and combine that with attractive branding, you truly will have success!
