How to Start a Business After Leaving the Military

By

Whether you are retired after a long career in the military or serving your first tour of duty, it’s time to move on to civilian life and all that entails. You have a great skill set that made you invaluable in service to our country and now you’d like to put those skills to work in a business of your own.

Putting Your Skills to Work as a Civilian

It doesn’t really matter what you did in the service; there are skills that you acquired along the way and those are the skills that will make you a great entrepreneur. Some of what you’ll need as a business owner will be the skills that drove you up the ranks. These skills include being:

  • Highly organized
  • An effective leader
  • Detail oriented
  • A self-starter
  • Respectful of authority
  • Focused on winning
  • Astute at recognizing potentially dangerous outcomes

And those are just some of the skills you learned in the military that will help you achieve success in whatever line of work you wish to pursue. However, some skills may yet need developing.

Don’t Wait to Study – Find a Military Friendly College Online

If you want to start a business after leaving the military, maybe you should start doing a little research before you leave! That’s just one tip to get you started down the entrepreneurial path to success. Even if you are stationed overseas without access to an American university, you can always find a military friendly online college. Distance learning is no longer in its infancy stages, so you can go all the way up to a post-graduate doctorate online if you so desire. Even if your business venture doesn’t necessitate having a degree to get licensed, the more you are in tune with your industry, the more successful you will be.

Research Low-Interest Funding for Vets

The VA has low-interest mortgage loans for vets honorably discharged, but there are also lenders that offer special rates on small business loans for vets. If you want to start your own business, you will need startup and operating capital until you begin seeing a profit, so check out loans for veterans. You’d be surprised at just how many lenders appreciate our vets and are more-than-willing to help them get started back in civilian life. Of course, they make a profit too off that interest, but keeping it low helps you to better afford financial funding in the very beginning.

You are about to embark on an exciting time of life, albeit one of transition. Starting your own business will help you stay focused during this transitory time and will actually be good ‘medicine’ for you at the same time as earning a living doing what you love. This is, after all, the key to unlocking success in any business you start. Love what you are doing, and it won’t feel so much like work! You can be your own boss, set your own rules and make a success of your career as a civilian. Good luck and thank you for all you have done for our country. Let’s keep America great!
