Setting Up a Successful Home Office

If you have made the decision to work from home, it is a good idea to set up a dedicated working area. This will ensure that you stay motivated and your output remains high. It can be easy to slip into bad habits when working from home so having a separate office can help you stay on track. Here are some tips for setting up our home office.
Choosing and Positioning A Desk

It is important to work from a desk to put you in the right mindset. If you do not like sitting down for long periods, then you can invest in a standing desk to work from. Lots of people are going for this option nowadays because it is better for your posture and your joints. When deciding where to place your desk, near a window is always a good option. You probably don’t realise how much of an effect natural light will have on your work output but if you are in a dark corner, you will be much less efficient and your workspace will not be pleasant.


Enforce Office Hours

This is important for you as well as the rest of the family. You need to be strict with yourself and work set hours, just the same as you would if you weren’t working from home. It is also important that the rest of the family know that, even though you are at home, that doesn’t mean you are available all day, and you need to be left to get on during your working hours. Make sure to give yourself a lunch break as well.


Equip Your Office Properly

It is a good idea to fit out your home office with all of the equipment you would have at a normal office. That way, it feels as though you are at work instead of being at home, and you are more likely to be productive. Get yourself a separate work computer if you can afford one, a good padfolio to keep things organized, and a well stocked stationery cupboard so you don’t end up writing on the back of envelopes and things like that.  


Stay Organized

This is probably one of the most important things to think about when setting up your home office. Make sure that you have a filing cabinet or some other drawers in there so you can put things away properly and avoid cluttering up your desk. If you implement a simple filing system from the outset, it is easy to keep on top of things. You should also make sure that you are only filling your office with things that a vital, if anything is unused, get rid of it.

If you are short on space, you’ll need to be creative with your storage solutions. Using floating shelves will open up a lot more storage without taking up too much space.


Make it welcoming for clients

If your business involves meeting with clients, you will probably do this in your home office. If you are hosting clients you’ll need to make sure that your office space is welcoming and professional looking. Clients won’t want to deal with you anymore if you are operating out of a messy bedroom rather than a professional office. If you don’t want to meet your clients at home, there are some alternative places you can meet them.
