How I was Changed by Entrepreneurialism

By

Becoming an entrepreneur. When I embarked on this adventure over 14 years ago, I had no idea what was in store for me.

Perhaps in the back of my mind I thought it would be easy. Just get a product out there and it will sell itself. I had the knowledge and experience, after all, as a graphic designer and writer.

Aw good thing I didn’t know what I was about to face. Because more lessons are learned from failure than success.

Not long after I started my business, my husband and I decided to get into another business—we turned our Victorian home into a vacation rental. That was the Spring of 2008. Then the recession hit.

And our finances took a big hit. We lost that house to foreclosure in 2010. And in the meantime, my husband’s hours were cut back and his paychecks would often be delayed. If ever I needed my business to be a success it was then.

And yet, profits did not come. Very few sales were made. I began to realize:

1) God didn’t care so much what was in my pocketbook as what was in my heart.

2) I lacked confidence. In fact, I had some severe soul wounds that needed healing. God started this process through my journey as an entrepreneur.

3) I didn’t trust God to take care of me. In fact, I thought he would let me down.

4) All those years, I had been hiding. Hiding my talents, running from opportunity, afraid of success. Of rejection. Of disappointment.

5) I thought that I had to be successful in order to be worthy.

6) I believed deep down that no one would listen to me because all I was was a “fat housewife.”

7) I had marginalized myself from childhood onwards and didn’t realize it. I thought that I didn’t matter.

8) I believed that I had to build my business all on my own. It was all up to me.

So God revealed this to me through my ups and downs as a business owner. I relied heavily on the Psalms, especially Psalm 84:

And how blessed all those in whom you live,
whose lives become roads you travel;
They wind through lonesome valleys, come upon brooks,
discover cool springs and pools brimming with rain!
God-traveled, these roads curve up the mountain, and
at the last turn—Zion! God in full view!

In fact, I read the Psalms every night and day. I then studied the words bless, blessed, and blessing in the Bible. It helped me transform the stress into blessings. I wrote a devotional and later published it.

But what I learned from that study still impacts me today: The Lord Is the Lord of the Harvest. It is not my job to provide. Not even my husband’s. God’s and God’s alone. My husband and I work as partners. God is in charge. I need to give everything to Him.

All I needed to do was to be faithful. Faithful to plant the seeds. What I needed to do was be obedient to His call, no matter how scary it was.
And definitely, I could not do this alone. Because the dreams God gave me for my business were far bigger than I ever imagined. I’m stepping out in faith and trying new things that I never dreamed that I would do. And I started building a team, supporting others along the way and helping them to achieve their dreams.

In giving people purpose, I found purpose. And clarity, Accountability. And growth. Not only in my business, but in my character and in my heart and soul.

That and so much more is how God changed me through entrepreneurialism.
