Relationships: the Key Factor to Your Branding Success

By

DanaIn this Internet age, trends seem to rule the roost when it comes to building a work at home business. Everyone is searching for that “magic pill” that will bring them instant success with very little effort.

But this is an illusion. It is like the foolish man building on sand. A Christian work at home business needs to be built on solid ground. On timeless business principles.

Branding is one of these timeless principles. Branding is not a hot new trend, though sometimes it appears that way since so many more people are talking about it. Branding is just the expression of who you are as a business and what makes you unique.

And effective branding is built with relationships.

God values relationships highly. Can we treat relationships less as His representatives?

How are we called to treat people?

For me, the central principle is found in 1 Corinthians 13. Many years ago, I prayed that I would have this kind of love for people, for those whom I minister to. And now that I am a business owner, I am still guided by these ideals.

Because the business is not about me. It’s about God working through me to help others. The other night, I was working hard on a display board for a fair the next morning. The thought came to me, “Why do I work so hard? Why do I put myself under this much pressure?”

The next morning, the answer became crystal clear: because when I am stretched, I am reaching for who God wants me to be. And in becoming that, in using my talents and gifts for Him, I help others do the same. And the benefit to me is the thrill I get in that transaction! It’s not even about the money; it truly is about serving others.

And I am finding it’s in building relationships that I accrue the most success. It takes time; it is not an overnight achievement.

For instance, in homeschooling fairs I participate in, I got to know a fellow vendor. We have talked many times over the last few years, specifically about the services homeschooling families need in this city.

Because I got to know him, I realized that there was a possible partnership that would benefit the both of us. I had what to me was a crazy, wild idea and despite my doubts and fears of being rejected, I shared it with him. He was thrilled because he also saw the same need and knew that we could work together. So now we are going to meet with a third partner to make this idea into a reality! I am beyond excited!

No relationship is too small. You just never know! As far as you are able, foster relationships with others and be friendly. Be there to serve. Share what you do and who you are in an honest way and you may find that people you thought would not be interested in your business will come to you. That’s what is happening to me!

People are generally happy when you share with them in an authentic way. The day after the vendor fair I talked about, I went to another fair run by a local Christian bookstore. I’ve gotten to know the owners over the last few years because I’ve participated in their fairs and they’ve also helped me get the word out about a homeschooling club I run.

That day, I almost didn’t give my flyers to them because I didn’t want to bother them. But I did anyway, and they were really happy I came by! It turned out that she had just talked to another homeschooling mother that was looking for exactly what I offered!

Relationships are key in running a business. When you foster healthy ones you will indeed have branding success!
