Still Standing Still

By

Joy Jochems - Single Moms Blogger“Are we there yet?” It’s the mantra of the road-weary, the song of the sojourner who’s been sitting too long. Those very words have undoubtedly slipped past your own lips at some point in your life’s journey. long travelsIt’s the impatient whine of waiting for the current road to end, the jittery anticipation of the “reachless” horizon. In short, it’s the waiting.

In Numbers 9:18 it says, “In this way, they traveled and camped at the Lord’s command wherever He told them to go. Then they remained in their camp as long as the cloud stayed over the Tabernacle” (emphasis added). If anyone knew the monotony of travel and the ringing of “Are we there yet?”, it was the Israelites! For some, the stop-start/camp-pack life was the only one they knew. Here’s what else they knew: obedience. They moved when the Lord said, “Move,” and they stayed still when He said, “Halt”… and they camped and waited until He designated otherwise.

Some days I feel like I’ve been “camping” for a lifetime. Waiting on God’s command to march, still standing still, yearning for the cloud to lift. Life on hold, plans curbed, simply remaining … Are we there yet?  But were I to walk on when God’s directed me to stay put, I would wander right past the blessings and lessons He’s planted for me exactly in this spot.

And what of those times when we get content in our tents? Settling in, nesting, handprints in the sidewalk and growth marks on the wall. Life is comfortable, it’s easy, it’s safe. Then the call comes from on high, and we’re jostled out of the safety zone, on the move to something new and unknown. But were we to stay when God’s urging us onward, the blessings and plans He’s designed for us could waft past.

Have you “camped” when God’s telling you to go? If you’ve seen the cloud lift and witnessed His hand pointing you onward, pack up your tent and walk!

Have you “moved on” when God’s telling you to stay? I know the days can drag on. I know the “standing still” and the waiting can wear on you. “Are we there yet?” drums in your heart. But hold fast! Your marching orders will come. Until that day, be faithful in your preparation and obedient in your waiting.
