When You Want To Be Her

Posted by: | Comments (1)

We’ve all seen that woman who always looks beautiful.

When You Want to Be Her, by Carey Scott… even if she’s just worked out.
… even if she just rolled out of bed.
… even if she has 5 kids.
even if she has a full-time job.
…even if she’s been crying.

And we’ve thought to ourselves, “How can I compete with that?”

Especially because we try to look our best — except in morning drop-off line at school — and still can’t compete with her.

It’s frustrating.

And it not only triggers those insecurities that tangle us up, but it can also awaken the not-so-nice girl in each of us.

We think things like: Read More→

When She Lashes Out At You…

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on When She Lashes Out At You…

She let me have it.

The email was hurtful and hateful, and she held nothing back.

This woman called me every name in the book, explained in detail why I was unworthy of her following my blog, and gave me a laundry list of why I was irrelevant. When She Lashes Out At You…

Ouch.

And I opened this email while on vacation with my husband.

Double ouch.

When people lash out at us, it often reinforces those messages we already believe that remind us we’re worthless. Read More→

When You Want to Get Even

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on When You Want to Get Even

Carey Scott - Honest Chatter About Lifecarey-get-evenDo not say, “I’ll get even with you!” Wait for the LORD, and he will save you. (Proverbs 20:22)

Seriously?  This must be a misprint.

Because if I understand it right, we are being instructed to let God handle it when we’ve been wronged.  We are told to not be revengeful but rather… let Him hand out the judgments.

This may be an easy verse to recite until that moment hits, and you’re the one wronged.

Then, it takes on a whole new meaning.

It takes on a whole new degree of difficulty.

It brings a whole new level of frustration.

Sometimes We Need To Shut Our Mouths

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Sometimes We Need To Shut Our Mouths

Carey Scott - Honest Chatter About Lifecarey-shut-mouthWant some sound advice to make your marriage flourish?

Here it is:  “Sometimes you need to shut your mouth, and pray about it instead.

A friend of mine spoke that into my life years ago.  While it initially caught me off guard (and made me a little defensive), it has proven to be wise advice.

You see, there are times the best thing we can do is keep our mouths closed.

Sheesh… so much easier said than done, eh?

She shared this advice after I dished about things my husband was doing that I wanted changed.  I had been looking for opportunities to share those things with Wayne.  I’d become so vocal about wanting him to be different which put a strain on our relationship.

But she reminded me that wasn’t the kind of wife God wanted me to be.

There’s Something About It

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on There’s Something About It

Carey Scott - Honest Chatter About Lifecarey-somethingThere’s something sweet about being called away from the busyness of life to spend time reconnecting to God’s heart.

There’s something comforting about redirecting your focus from the world to your family.

There’s something humbling about realizing you’re not as important as you thought.

There’s something rejuvenating about giving your mind and body intentional rest.

There’s something profound about stepping back and seeing the bigger picture.

There’s something calming about the absence of deadlines staring you down.

And I realize for this to happen, sometimes you have to give up…in order to gain.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”  (Jeremiah 29:13)

Struggling With the “What-Ifs”

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Struggling With the “What-Ifs”

Carey Scott - Honest Chatter About Lifecarey-what-ifMy family went camping this past weekend.

There is nothing like carving out a space in nature, propping up a tent,  lighting a fire, roasting hot dogs, fishing in the river, and sleeping with the sounds of nature ushering in sweet dreams.

But…

I stayed home.

While my description of camping above always sounds good in theory, I realize that my reality is totally different.

I love to be outdoors.

I love the smell of a campfire.

S’mores are one of life’s great pleasures.

But that’s where it ends.  To be honest, camping to me is the Holiday Inn Express.

Sometimes I Want More

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on Sometimes I Want More

Carey Scott - Honest Chatter About Lifecarey-moreI wish that God’s endorsement was the only approval I craved.

Sheesh… it would make my life so much easier.

But I have a confession.

Too often, I care about what others think… more.  And that kind of thinking is a demonic trap that sets me up for failure, because I try to hit a moving target.

What a lose-lose situation.

While I know my Creator loves me and accepts me  without conditions, there are times I still long for… “more.”

And that “more” feeds my appetite for the world’s adoration… which is full of conditions.

Requirements I cannot possibly meet.

Neither can you.

The Alphabet of God

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Carey Scott - Honest Chatter About Lifecarey-alphabetMy husband said to me the other day, “Carey, we are in such a place of bounty.  God is blessing our family so richly.”

It’s true.

We’ve walked in some crunchy places lately.

We’ve overcome situations that could have caused us to drown in despair.

Our path has been filled with rocks and mud.

But today… I’m in a grateful place.

It Will Find You

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on It Will Find You

Carey Scott - Honest Chatter About Lifecarey-find-you1988.

That’s 288 months.

And if my math is right… it adds up to 8,760 days.

THAT is the expiration date of the bear-shaped bottle of clover honey I found in my pantry last weekend.

Oh my stars… that is insane.

I’m sure many of you are either laughing at me or dashing to your pantry to see if you can beat that date.

… I feel pretty confident I hold the record.

But here’s the interesting thing…

I’ve actually been intentional in cleaning out the pantry (no, really), checking dates and tossing things that have expired.  I’ve even re-arranged what items go on what shelf several times in the past several years.

But somehow… I missed this.

And even though I thought I’d been good about tossing foods past their prime, this bottle of honey – shoved into the very back, dark corner of the shelf – sat undetected.

Ugh… Gross.

But you know what?  This concept translates so perfectly to or lives.

While I’ve been diligent to dispose of some obvious rotten attitudes and actions… a few have managed to remain hidden.

Eventually though, they see the light of day.

Here’s what I mean…

I may choose to speak words of affirmation and encouragement, but now and then a “spicy” word or two slips out of my mouth in frustration.

I’ll decide not to watch certain TV shows because of language or content, but linger a bit too long on a different show that pushes the same limit.

I will resolve to follow God’s command to love others, but find exception with that one person who tests my patience (no, it’s not you).

Undoubtedly, those old sinful attitudes and actions have been around a long time.  They’ve become habits.  They are familiar responses and thought-patterns, so we tend to be blind to the sinful component of each.

Dude… you’ve got ‘em, too.

And rest assured: they will be revealed.

As the Israelites were preparing to cross the Jordan River and battle for possession of the Promised Land, two tribes (Gad and Reuben) decided that rather than join in the battle with their brothers, they wanted to stay put and set up camp there instead.  When they approached Moses with their plan, he wasn’t pleased.

He recounted the wrath of God when they’d refused to take Canaan after the spies (minus Joshua and Caleb) reported the inhabitants were too big and unconquerable.  God’s punishment of 40 years in the desert was fresh in their memories.

Moses said in Number 32:23… “But if you don’t do this, you’ve sinned against the Lord. Know that your sin will find you.”

In other words:  At some point… Expect consequences.

That truth still holds steady today.

Just like that 24-year-old bottle of honey, eventually God will open our pantry and reveal things that expired long ago and need to be thrown away… for good.

Sometimes we try to hide our sin.

Other times we may not realize it’s that big of an issue.

And some may miss it all together.

But God is gracious enough to point it out.

You see, He wants more for His children.  Our Father loves us too much to leave us where we are.  But it requires something of us.

It takes submission to His plan.

It takes some intentionality.

It takes willingness to look honestly at our “stuff.”

It requires allowing God to clean our pantries for expired things.

As Christ-followers, let’s be willing to toss out habits… attitudes… thoughts… words… and actions… that bring rot and decay into our lives.

Because honestly… we were created to live for so much more.

What keeps you from letting go of your old ways and embracing the new life you have in Jesus?

He Knows What He Is Doing

Carey Scott - Honest Chatter About LifeHe Knows What He Is Doing

Real satisfaction comes not in understanding God’s motives, but in understanding His character, in trusting in His promises, and in leaning on Him and resting in Him as the Sovereign who knows what He is doing and does all things well.”  (Joni Eareckson Tada)

Maybe you are struggling today and need to be reminded of who God is.

I so get that.

Life is big.  Decisions are hard.  People are confusing.

But God is so very good.

Take some time to read these.  Soak them in.  Accept their reality.  Then lean and rest in Him… alone. Read More→
