Is Mentoring Right For You?
ByIt’s easy to find success stories that contain a mentoring component. So many successful business owners, sales people and others have found a great deal of value in having a mentor. It’s not hard to find successful people who are willing to give a great deal of credit for their success to those who helped mentor them along the way.
In that sense, the answer to the question posed by the title of this article should be an unequivocal “YES!” Receiving some experienced advice is something that can work for everyone and that includes you! The more accurate answer, however, may be “it depends”. While a good mentor can help just about anyone, not everyone is ready, willing or able to get the most out of a mentor/mentored relationship.
So the real question is whether or not you’re prepared for mentoring? Consider these questions in order to decide.
Are you willing to listen to others? If you’re one of those “my way or the highway” types, expert guidance might not work for you. You need to have an open mindset that’s accepted of new ideas. If you’re not willing to believe that someone else who’s already been through the ringer may have something valuable to tell you, you’re certainly not ready to get any real advantage from a mentor program.
Are you in a position to do something with the guidance you’d receive? Great ideas, smart guidance, informed direction and an experienced perspective can radically improve any small business endeavor. However, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to find a mentor if you aren’t going to be able to follow through with your business in the first place. Make sure you’re serious about building your business and that this isn’t going to be a short-lived interest. It isn’t worth finding help if you don’t know for a fact that you’re going to follow through with what happens.
Are you willing to admit to having questions and to committing mistakes. If you have too much ego to confess when you’re wrong or if the idea of not having all of the answers bothers you, working with a mentor might not be a great decision. You need to be secure enough to ask questions and to rely upon the advice of more experienced people. It’s not a good fit for the big ego.
If you are at a point where you’re willing to listen and if you’re committed to making your project a success, consider mentoring. Until you’re there, however, it may not be a perfect fit for you.
Mentoring
It can change everything.
