Why You Need A Prayer Journal

By

by Alyssa Dees Avant

A small notebook with white lined pages may not seem like anything significant to the average person, but to me it held the opportunity to communicate with God and to have Him help me to shape my future. I started a prayer journal when I was fourteen. After experiencing my first season of teen rebellion, I had repented and needed to stay connected to God more closely.

I had been taught, even as a young teen that the closer you are to God, the easier it was to resist temptation. That did not mean that temptation was not going to come, or that I wouldn’t experience it, but I knew that with God by my side, I could do so more easily.

To get closer to God I had to spend time with Him. As a teen, it was often hard to focus and really listen to Him. I needed something to help me do that. Maybe you do too. That is why I believe that you need a prayer journal. A prayer journal can help you in a number of ways.

A prayer journal allows you to focus by writing out your thoughts, feelings, troubles, hopes and dreams. The act of writing them out is powerful. These things all become more meaningful when written down, not only can you vent your frustrations but you can also document your hopes.

It will also allow you to record things. One of the most wonderful results of having written in a prayer journal for over a decade is the fact that I have a record of the many events and times that God has worked in my life. I can see where He moved things around for me and distinctly shifted events in my life to work for His plan and His purpose.

Finally, a prayer journal will allow you to meet with God. Sure, you can do so without one, but the commitment that you make when you determine to write in a prayer journal helps you to stay committed to meeting with God daily. It helps you to see that you have written in it daily for a week, a month, a year and gives you a reason to come back and do it again tomorrow. You are more likely to keep your appointment with God when you can see that you have done so for so many days, it makes it harder to break your commitment.

Get yourself a prayer journal and watch what it can do for your life and your relationship with God.

Alyssa – you are so right – a prayer journal is a place to meet with God. I have had prayer journals since I was a teenager and they totally impact my spiritual journey and relationship with the Lord.

A Note From Jill

CWAHM.com is a dream that God has truly brought to life. I began CWAHM.com in 2000 while learning HTML. I thought it would be a fun hobby and a way to compile all the information I was seeking on working at home. I am a mom of 2 (1 boy, 1 girl), a wife and I do work from home. I accepted Christ as my savior at the age of seven as a Sparky in my church’s AWANA club. I have a Bachelor’s degree from Grace University in Human Development and Family Studies/Bible. I love working from home and I pray that CWAHM will be a blessing in your life as it has been in mine.
