Jump Start Your Work-At-Home Job Search in the New Year
By
Starting in November, life gets busy. Holidays, travel, family…it all takes away from extras like having the time to conduct a work-at-home job search. But now that the holidays are over and the New Year is here, it’s a great time to jump back into looking for a work-from-home job. While the economy continues to be in a slump and the competition for jobs are fierce, employers are hiring. Here are some strategies to get your telecommuting job search back on track.
- Make time everyday to do your job search. New jobs are posted every day and your best chance to get considered comes with getting your application or resume in as soon as possible after a new job is posted.
- Review your resume. Check that you’re using strong verbs to describe your work experience. Remember that a resume is not a list of your accomplishments. It’s a marketing document that should impress employers not just with what you’ve done, but how well you express what you’ve done.
- Tailor your resume to each job you apply to. Create a resume that highlights all the skills and experience that match what the employer wants. That will mean tweaking your resume for each job. It takes time, but the more you fit the job description, the better the chance you have to get hired.
- Be ready to interview. Most employers will email you to schedule an interview. Some may call out of the blue. Either way, be ready by taking time to learn about the company and the job so you can tailor your responses to fit the job.
- Don’t be afraid to follow-up. The most frustrating part about applying to work-at-home jobs is how few companies respond to applicants. If the job announcement provides a cut-off date for submissions, wait a week or two until after that date to email or call. If no date is supplied, wait two weeks and then follow-up. If the announcements specifically says not to call, don’t call.
