In 2003, I started mixing up natural body products for myself and my friends and family in my kitchen as a way to relax. At that point, I wasn’t even thinking about a business. But people loved the products, and I started selling a few just as a way to offset the cost of the ingredients and supplies for my new hobby. Around the same time, I was looking for holiday gifts for my goddaughter and other little girls I knew, and I was having a hard time finding positive products with brown girls on them. My friend Lawanda asked me to make party favors for my goddaughter’s 5th birthday, and the personalized lip balms I made were a huge hit. I put two and two together and saw an opportunity. The research I then did on the market backed up my hunch that I was on to something.

j.blossom officially debuted in 2006 with our signature line of fun, natural bath and body products for girls: lip balm, body lotion, bubble bath, and gift sets in yummy Strawberry-Banana Smoothie and Great Big Grape scents. I wanted to go beyond just something fun for bath time, and really celebrate little girls, so I decided to put a different positive affirmation on each bottle. For example: “Short or tall, thick or thin — I love the skin that I am in!”

The “Hugs, Not Bugs!” Natural Insect Repellent was introduced this spring. There are several other products in the works that will launch this holiday season - I’m very excited about that!

Two-thirds of the respondents experienced greater productivity from employees working full-time or part-time from home.

A third said that they were able to hire better qualified employees through the lure of telecommuting, while 39 per cent reported better staff retention levels. READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE

From U.S. News & World Report:

It’s a dicey economy. And if you are a telecommuter, you may be at special risk.

Fact 1: In these days of economic uncertainty, everybody is looking for ways to cut back. That everybody may include your employer.

Fact 2: Employers are only human. Humans tend to take the easy way out. And it’s easier to lay off someone you only see rarely than to lay off someone you see every day and who has become an integral part of your work life.

You may have fought to earn telecommuting privileges. You may love the savings in gas and wardrobe expenses. You may know in your very soul that telecommuting has made you a more productive, and hence valuable, employee.

But please consider this annoying-yet-true cliché: out of sight, out of mind. It’s human nature. That’s why face time at work is necessary. And these days, it’s more important than ever to maintain a high profile while telecommuting. Here’s how: CLICK HERE TO READ ENTIRE ARTICLE

I’ve had a chance to look over an advanced copy of the book and Moody Publishers (as well as Jocelyn Green who put the whole project together) have done a beautiful job.

The book includes devotions written by wives from every branch of the military. I hope it will bless many military wives.

A little more about the book:
If your spouse, or someone you know, has been deployed recently, the stress of that situation will resonate with you. Jocelyn Green speaks directly to the wives of deployed seamen, marines, airmen, and soldiers, via the experiences of their spouses.

This book is not a “ten easy steps” for a painless life, instead, it is a collection of devotions that squarely addresses the challenges wives face when their husbands are away protecting freedom. Challenges like: how does a military wife maintain a strong sense of patriotism without allowing her country to become an idol? What good can possibly come from moving every two to three years? And how can I be sure that God has a purpose for my life that is as strong as His purpose for my husband’s? The foundation of this devotional is the unchanging character of God and the anchor of Jesus Christ, even amidst the shifting circumstances of a military family.

The book can be pre-ordered on Amazon.com.

It’s a list of ideas for spending time with your daughter.

Here are some great ways to spend time with “just the girls:”

• Keep a stash of baking supplies on hand and ready to go so you can make the most of a rainy day by whipping up a variety of items. Once your creations have cooled, take a walk in the rain to deliver them to friends. You’ll spend a wonderful day working together making a delicious treat, and do something kind for someone else at the same time!
• Make homemade cards or pictures for kids at the local hospital, or a home for the elderly. Or write a letter to a far away relative
• Visit the local library and check out some new books to read aloud together
• Get out those photos and work on your albums together
• Create a family “newsletter” of recent events or happenings. This would be great to add to your holiday cards!
• Write a story together. Try writing about Katie and her friends, or about your own Precious Girls Club!
• Pick berries or apples or visit a farmer’s market
• Plant flowers or an indoor seed garden. Or force bulbs in the winter.
• Go on a picnic together. Or just go out to lunch!
• Get the binoculars and a magnifying glass and start a nature journal with observations from your own backyard
• Take a walk together and identify plants or birds.

Listen in as author Lee Strobel shares about his recently released DVD, The Case for Faith, from LIONSGATE®.

Based on the Gold Medallion-winning book of the same name The Case for Faith is a life-changing DVD that will alter the way people look at the world.

In The Case for Faith, Strobel showcases his investigative skills to address the primary objections to Christianity. As a former atheist, Strobel understands the rational resistance to faith. Strobel investigates two of the most emotional objections to Christianity, which have become barriers to faith and are confronted by believers and skeptics alike: Why is Jesus the only way to God? And, how could a loving God exist if there is evil and suffering in the world?

Confronting these tough questions, Strobel fields them well. The Case for Faith, the second in a series of three DVDs based on Strobel’s books, Strobel turns his tenacious investigative skills to the most persistent emotional objections to belief - the eight “heart” barriers to faith:

1. If there’s a loving God, why does this pain-wracked world groan under so much suffering and evil?

2. If the miracles of God contradict science, then how can any rational person believe that they’re true?

3. If God is morally pure, how can he sanction the slaughter of innocent children as the Old Testament says he did?

4. If God cares about the people he created, how could he consign so many of them to an eternity of torture in hell just because they didn’t believe the right things about him?

5. If Jesus is the only way to heaven, then what about the millions of people who have never heard of him?

6. If God really created the universe, why does the evidence of science compel so many to conclude that the unguided process of evolution accounts for life?

7. If God is the ultimate overseer of the church, why has it been rife with hypocrisy and brutality throughout the ages?

8. If I’m still plagued by doubts, then is it still possible to be a Christian?

Showcasing his journalistic background, Strobel brings the viewer along on his powerful quest to meet some of the Christian community’s most notable leaders, such as Peter Kreeft and William Lane Craig as well as his everyday friends and acquaintances that battle the eight arguments against faith. Through compelling video of personal stories and experts addressing these topics, combined with reflection and interaction, Christians and spiritual seekers will learn how to overcome these obstacles, deepen their spiritual convictions, and find new confidence that Christianity is a reasonable faith.

Listen in as Sharon Hinck shares with us about her newest novel, Stepping Into Sunlight. It’s an incredibly moving story and Sharon also has a blog encouraging women to do a small kind act for a different person each day. During the 30 days of September, they are going to do set a goal to do these small kind acts. Sound fun? Sound scary? Sound impossible? I’m taking the challenge! Join me here!

Penny, a Navy chaplain’s wife, witnesses a violent crime and struggles with post traumatic stress while her husband is on his first deployment. Far from family and friends, she fights to heal for the sake of her seven-year-old son, even though ordinary tasks take heroic efforts. She’s haunted by flashbacks and is tormented by fear, so she designs a project to speed her recovery: doing one small, kind act for a different person each day. <itunes:summary>Listen in as Sharon Hinck shares with us about her newest novel, Stepping Into Sunlight. It's an incredibly moving story and Sharon also has a blog encouraging women to do a small kind act for a different person each day. During the 30 days of September, they are going to do set a goal to do these small kind acts. Sound fun? Sound scary? Sound impossible? I'm taking the challenge! Join me here!

About Stepping Into Sunlight:
Penny, a Navy chaplainrsquo;s wife, witnesses a violent crime and struggles with post traumatic stress while her husband is on his first deployment. Far from family and friends, she fights to heal for the sake of her seven-year-old son, even though ordinary tasks take heroic efforts. Shersquo;s haunted by flashbacks and is tormented by fear, so she designs a project to speed her recovery: doing one small, kind act for a different person each day. The results are sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, and often used by God in surprising ways.

"Told with humor and lump-in-the-throat insight, Stepping into Sunlight is a compelling story of learning to live again after trauma. This was my first Sharon Hinck novel, but it garnered her a permanent spot on my favorite authors list.rdquo;ndash; Deborah Raney, author of A Vow to Cherish and The Clayburn Novels series

Ever since OPEC vexed Jimmy Carter into wearing a cardigan, telecommuting has been touted as a fix for what ails the US office worker — the agony and expense of commuting, the drudgery of cubicles, the shortage of family time. Long before the advent of the Web, evangelists were confident that cordless phones and faxes had already made the office a relic. “Working from home holds the promise of a new American dream,” Paul and Sarah Edwards gushed in their 1985 manifesto, Working From Home, in which they extolled the virtues of commuting from breakfast nook to den.

Two decades later, however, most workers still trudge to the office. Though a third of the more than 150 million working Americans telecommute at least occasionally, most do so just a few days each month. Only 40 percent of companies permit any sort of work-at-home arrangement, which means most insist on full-time attendance. According to a 2006 survey by the Telework Exchange, the top fear among resisters is that they’ll lose control of their employees, whom they doubtlessly envision frittering away the hours between 9 and 5 playing Minesweeper and munching Cheetos. … Read the entire article …

3. Play a game - and no, I do not mean a video game on the Wii. I mean a board game (remember those). Invite friends over and make a night of it or just sit down with the kids and play Candyland.

But in Rich Sloan’s opinion, the current recession presents the perfect opportunity for entrepreneurs to start a new home-based business.

“You name it, it’s being started up,” says the optimistic Sloan. “Because the barriers to starting and running a viable business are lower than ever, people are starting just about every kind of business imaginable.”

Sloan’s opinions aren’t surprising considering that he’s the founder of Startup Nation, a Web site that’s been tracking trends in entrepreneurship since 2003.

Sloan, who calls himself the Chief Startupologist of the site, says that banks are more likely to support a home-based operation because it doesn’t have to pay of fixed overhead costs. “Basing your business at home instead of in a brick-and-mortar facility positions you for a better success rate out of the gate,” he says. “When you don’t have utilities, insurance and rent to pay on a building you don’t have that fixed overhead. While you build your business you can remain responsive and profitable.” ……… Read the Entire Article HERE
