Let It Go: Hebrews 12:1

Posted by: | Comments (5)

Elisa GilmoreWhy is it so hard to let some things go?

For some time now, I have been dealing with some discomfort and it was suspected that I may have gall bladder issues. (Stick with me…I’m going somewhere with this. lol!)  After seeking two specialists, it was suggested to have a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal surgery).

What?!!! Depart from my gall bladder? Read More→

Moms in Ministry Moment blogger Elisa GilmoreFirst let me begin by thanking the many readers who have missed receiving and reading Moms in Ministry Moments.  Your words and emails encouraged me deeply and I could not wait to get back to share lessons and teachings that will continue to encourage, equip and empower us to be and do all that God has for us.

These two months or so have been rather challenging for me and my family and at the same time, we have been blessed tremendously with God showing up mightily in our lives. Read More→

Pantry Clean Up

Posted by: | Comments (2)

Pantry- a room or closet in which food, groceries, and other provisions, or silverware, dishes, etc., are kept;  a shelter or other place where food is dispensed to the needy, either as groceries or as meals.

Have you ever gone to your pantry or cabinet to look for an item and could not find it, even though you knew without a shadow of a doubt that the item was in there?

Periodically, I find myself standing, staring, and searching in the pantry for items sometimes needed to cook a meal to only walk away empty handed.  After getting frustrated with having not being able to cook a specific meal, or having to get dressed to make a quick run to the store, or having to ask my  husband to stop off after work to pick up the item, I say to myself, “this is enough”.  This usually leads to me taking out every item out of the pantry and throwing out things that have expired and organizing those things that are out of place.  Not only do I find the item that I was looking for but in some cases I find that I have multiple bottles or cans of the same product. Study Habits: 2 Timothy 2:15

Posted by: | Comments (6)

As I sit and look at my calendar or should I say “Ask My Calendar” (read my previous post and you’ll get that), I notice that I have a number of dates committed for personal and spiritual development.  In fact, March seems to be over taken with the start of upcoming Bible classes at church, continued on-line tele-classes and conference calls, retreat, parent/daughter workshop in New York, and training for newly accepted opportunities.  Additionally, I must still homeschool and write, develop, and facilitate on-line book discussions, workshops/seminars and teach Bible studies. “Mirror, mirror on the wall…” or should I say “calendar, calendar on my desk…” or “schedule, schedule in my phone…”

Approximately, eight years ago, God made it quite clear that I was to be alert and guard the walls of my home, especially my time. I took those marching orders seriously and fought with all I had in me to make sure that my home, my first ministry, was the primary focus. As I look back, it wasn’t easy but I knew it was something I had to do.

I let go some activities I loved, limited phone calls of those who drained me and simply prayed for them (thank God for caller ID), and I ceased being “busy in church.” As I look back, it was truly for my good and through my obedience, God has tremendously honored my willingness to surrender a number of things, people, and situations to Him.

At this moment in my life, opportunities are being presented on a regular basis and they all are what some may call “good things” but it is during these times that we must make sure that we are in God’s perfect will and not only in His permissive will. Therefore, I reflected on some points that helped me in the past become a good steward of time and am reminded of my need to apply these same tips in my present season. Read More→

Don’t Miss Your Bus

Posted by: | Comments (11)

Recently, while riding in the car, one of my daughters noticed someone running. She wanted to know why this person was running full speed down the sidewalk. After a quick look in my rear view mirror, I noticed a public transit bus coming down the street and then noticed that this individual was running toward a bus stop, where others were standing and patiently waiting for the bus to arrive.

Growing up in New Orleans, LA, I traveled on the public transit bus with my grandmother to either shop or to simply pay a few bills (she wouldn’t dare take a chance and trust the post office to make her payments). Later, as I became a teenager, the public transit was my means of getting to and from school. But due to the fact that my children are blessed to not have to take the bus to get to and from their destinations (sometimes I questions if it is really a blessing or not), they were clueless to the urgency of this individual running full speed down the street to catch a bus.

If you are like me and have had to run to catch a bus or plane, train, or automobile (smile), I am sure you can relate. But for those of you who cannot, let me share what a person in this situation may be saying to themselves and take a moment to see how these same thoughts may pertain to our plans, goals, and desires for 2011.

1. “It is going to be another 15-25 minutes before the next bus comes, I can’t miss the bus.”
Lord, I am going to do whatever it takes for me to get to the destination that you have for me. I can’t and don’t want to miss being in your perfect will.

Philippians 3:12 [ Pressing Toward the Goal ] “Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.”

What Are You Giving? Acts 20:35

Moms In Ministry Moment
Elisa Gilmore,
Wife, Mother & Ministry Leader

During this time of the year, most people are concerned with the busyness of Christmas and as usual the real meaning of Christmas, Christ, is pushed in the background. As I thought about how God gave the ultimate gift, His Son Jesus, I could not help but to think about the Acts 20:35 – “I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ Then I had to ask myself, what am I giving this Christmas?

Normally, when giving gifts, especially to our children, we tend to make it a point to give them what they really want (if the gift is within reason of course) and isn’t it a delight to see expressions of sheer joy on their faces once they’ve received the gift. We also receive great joy in knowing that we have met the desires of someone we love and care for. Read More→

Grow Up: Hebrews 5:12-14

As Moms in Ministry, it is amazing how we are able to wear so many hats and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we have a tendency to do a pretty good job.  But if we had to be honest with ourselves, how would we really evaluate ourselves?

Would we determine our success at how many speaking engagements we received, how many new pages written in a book, how clean our homes are, or how well our children are doing in school?  Now all of these things are noteworthy, but is it most important to our Father?

The Lord has had me, for a couple years (yes….years), making some tough choices and decisions in my life to grow me up more in Christ.  Can I say, it has not been easy in most cases but I desire God to finish the good work started in me (Philippians 1:6), so I know it will be worth it in the end.

Running and Hiding: Genesis 3:8-9

Make it stop!!

People, homeschooling, housework, intense fellowships with husband (nice way of saying “arguments”), deadlines, ministry assignments, phone calls, texts, and now Facebook.

Running and hiding! Have you ever felt like doing this?  Well, I don’t get this feeling often but that is what I recently felt like doing!

Shortly after having a sheer meltdown, tears and all, I realized that was not the answer nor could I or would I really want to run and hide.

Most of us are familiar with the story of Adam and Eve and how after disobeying God, they ran and hid or at least they thought they were hiding.  As we can see from the first “first family”, it almost seems natural for us to simply want to run and hide when we have disobeyed God but what about when we are basically being obedient to what God has asked us to do and we still get that feeling.

The Call to Preparation: Ephesians 3:1-6

Moms in Ministry Moment
Elisa Gilmore,
Wife, Mother & Ministry Leader

On February 8, 2007, my mentor, Minister Joy Briscoe of the First Baptist Church of Glenarden, gathered five ladies together for what we thought would be a time of laughter and “good eating”.  Little did we know that God had clearly given her a word to share with us and to express that we were to realize and accept that we were in a season of preparation.   At that time, all the giggles and jokes stopped or should I say that I stopped giggling and joking.  It was apparent that God was beginning to do something, but I honestly was not sure if I really wanted to hear anything about it.

You see, I was OK with volunteering in various positions in the church but for some reason, Joy had the ability to see much more than what I wanted to see, hear or even do or maybe more than what I wanted to accept.  In fact, she still does, especially as it pertains to ministry. Read More→
