“Dad! This white dude is RICH!” This was the catalyst for Jen Hatmaker to start her journey to rid her home and life of excess as her family was housing 12 evacuees, this 10-year-old Hurricane Ike evacuee entered her home with this exclamation. “For years I didn’t realize this because so many others had more,” Hatmaker says in 7. “We were surrounded by extreme affluence, which tricks you into thinking you’re in the middle of the pack…. The day I am unaware of my privileges and unmoved by my greed is the day something has to change.”

Food. Clothes. Spending. Media. Possessions. Waste. Stress. Jen spends 30 days on each topic, boiling it down to the number seven. Only eat seven foods, wear seven articles of clothing, and spend money in seven places. Eliminate use of seven media types, give away seven things each day for one month, adopt seven green habits, and observe “seven sacred pauses.” So, what’s the payoff from living a deeply reduced life? For Jen’s family it was the discovery of a greatly increased God-call toward simplicity and generosity that transcends social experiment to become a radically better existence.

In Jen’s words:
“I had 327 pieces of clothing in my closet. We spent money at 66 different places a month on average, not including repeat expenditures. We had four gaming systems, three computers, and five TV’s, most of them usually on. We threw away pounds and pounds of food each week we never got around to eating. We needed a second trashcan to contain our weekly waste. We were too busy to look each other in the eye. Something had to change.

“Enter: 7, a social and spiritual experiment my family embarked on which I chronicled. Drowning in tension over our own materialism and losing the battle against consuming, we decided to go radical for a year and see what God would do. Boiling seven areas of excess down to just seven choices in seven months, we put our greed and apathy on the table and said, ‘God, transform us.’ Somehow against all odds, the project was completed, the words were written, and 7 is now a book.”

Many non-Catholics are perplexed by the practice of reverence to designated saints but still somewhat interested by the history of the saints. For example, did you know that relics of the saints – enshrined in churches in the U.S. and worldwide  – include hearts, fingers, arms, skulls and teeth? That Saint Casimir, who chose not to marry and instead to attend to the poor, is the patron saint of bachelors? And Saint Isidore of Seville, who in a desperate effort to stop the decay of Rome in 560-636 wrote a massive encyclopedia of the arts, sciences, engineering, medicine and agriculture, is considered the patron saint of the Internet?

Author Thomas J. Craughwell chronicles these fascinating facts in Saints Preserved, An Encyclopedia of Relics (Image, July 12). Craughwell did extensive research of 350 saints among the estimated 40,000 saints designated by the church.  “Anyone who thinks that the cult of relics of the saints is itself a relic of the Middle Ages should log on to eBay,” he writes. “On any given day of the week the online shopper will find a thriving business in the sale of relics, ranging from the dust from the tomb of Christ to splinters of the True Cross to bone fragments of countless saints.”

Dana Jorgensen is not what you expect.

From aspiring hockey player to worship leader; from Ottawa, Ontario, to the Music City; Dana Jorgensen has been on an incredible journey that God has perfectly orchestrated to bring him to this moment and has made his third album Everything to Beautiful – in stores August 16, 2011 – a reality.

Our guest was author Marylu Tyndall, who chatted with us about her new novel, Surrender the Heart, and about how she got started writing.

MaryLu began her career as a mathematician (!) and worked as software engineer for 15 years. Not too many years ago, she decided to test the waters as a writer. Now, she spends her days writing historical romances packed with adventure and spiritual themes. Her passion is to write stories that not only entertain but expose Christians to their full potential in Christ.

Our first guest, Denise Hunter, shared with is that her newest novel, Driftwood Lane (fabulous book, by the way!) is the last in the series takes place in Nantucket and with it a riviting story of romance and personal conflict.

Diana’s favorite “work-at-home” tip has when Denise suggested writing in her car while her son attended football practice for 2 1/2 hours.  It goes to show how work-at-home moms can be creative.

Her latest marketing allows you to be the publicist.  You can sign up on her website and the more you talk about her book, tweet, submit a review, etc., the better your changes of winning – and the prize is a Kindle!

Our second guest was entrepreneur Holley Stofferahn. We chatted with Holley about how she went about choosing her business and how she set things up.

A website is so critical to your success.  When you look at their website, you know what a difference it truly does.  We absolutely love this site.  One key point that Jill and Diana both noticed is how awesome the contact page is and seeing the husband and wife team.

Marketing their business they find it best to meet personally.  They love to network at local events, have their art up at numerous places around the city and more.  (How cute is that?!)
